Peek into green corners and backyards, cross bridges and rivers, discover photo spots and trendy cafés: Anyone who wanders through a city, lets themselves drift, sets off with an open mind and a curiosity to experiment, can experience a kind of travelling miracle: Concrete deserts become spaces of discovery and tarmac roads sprout flowers. The city remains the same, but the view changes.
The members of our editorial team went on an expedition in the cities of North Rhine-Westphalia with light luggage and a camera, with an inspired half-knowledge and a great desire for new things. And came back with very personal experiences.
What makes them special: On their urban expeditions, they do not follow any designated hiking trails, but only have a rough route in mind. Instead of continuous markings, there is plenty of room for spontaneous experiences, and instead of clearly defined routes, there are always new side streets to explore.
The tour suggestions always start and end at the train station, and in between you can follow our tips more or less as the mood takes you - and find your own favourite paths. Experience shows that getting off the beaten track is a must. Just let yourself drift!
You will gradually find new urban hiking tours here. So it's always worth checking back from time to time.
