From the literature café to the book citySpecial book places

A cosy evening on the couch with a good book? Sounds good! However, we think that books can also be experienced wonderfully away from the sofa at home. Discover places with us where books play a very special role. For example, the book city of Langenberg. Or museums about the history of the book of books. Spend the afternoon in a chic literary café or treat yourself to a break at the book counter. Here you will find short tips for short trips to special book places in your NRW.

Tip 1Book city Langenberg

For many bookworms and bookworms, Langenberg has long been an insider tip: along the old cobbled main street and in the side alleys, there are five second-hand bookshops, a bookbindery, calligraphy courses and a two-room museum dedicated to Goethe and Ginkgo. And the Bücherhaus Langenberg, for example, also houses an organic bakery and a café - simply cosy.

At the large Langenberg book market, which takes place twice a year amidst the picturesque backdrop of the historic old town centre, around 20 antiquarian bookshops from the region offer their treasures. Langenberg then becomes a "Mecca for all book lovers".

Tip 2Corvey Castle Treasure

Did you know that Corvey Castle on the Weser is home to a princely library which, with around 75,000 books, is one of the most valuable and largest private libraries in Germany? We have the poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben to thank for this treasure. He had his study in the centre of the library from 1860 to 1874, and he enhanced the quality of the holdings and doubled the collection. A real book lover. Today, the "Hoffmann Room" can still be visited - along with a total of 14 other historic rooms.

Anyone visiting Corvey Castle should ideally make a day trip of it. In addition to the Covey Princely Library, the UNESCO World Heritage Site offers other highlights full of historical significance. The Carolingian westwork from the early days of the Benedictine abbey is not only the oldest building in Westphalia, but also the oldest westwork of all.

Tip 3Coffee, cake and books

Whether reading, buying or borrowing on site - at the Literaturcafé Goldmund in Cologne, everything revolves around books. Book lovers will find around 3,000 titles here. This is the most extensive and diverse collection of a book café in the cathedral city. Browse through travel literature over coffee and cake, buy a new crime novel to take home or borrow a book in the bookcrossing zone, read it through and send it on its way - all this is possible in the Literaturcafé. Concerts, readings and book presentations also take place regularly on a small stage.

Tip 4The book of books

The Bible Museum at the University of Münster requires a detective's instinct: it is part of the Institute for New Testament Textual Research, which is constantly working on reconstructing the original text of the Greek New Testament - "detectives on God's Word", so to speak. This makes the breadth and depth of the exhibition unique in the world. And located in the centre of the Westphalian cathedral city, the museum is the ideal starting point for further discoveries or walks through Münster.

Visitors to the Bible Museum in Wuppertal can experience the writing techniques of antiquity. Original Bibles and Old Testament scrolls are on display as well as facsimiles, such as the famous scrolls of Cumran. One focus of the exhibition is on the history of the Bible in the Middle Ages, with old translations and early Bible prints complementing the show. Visitors can try their hand at making paper, printing on historical machines or creating cuneiform tablets. Please book in advance!

And if you need a coffee after so much hands-on activity, it's best to have it at Wuppertal's only book counter - Café Hutmacher on Nordbahntrasse. Quaint and cosy.
