Diemelsee Nature Park

Diemelsee

A total of nine eight-hundred-meter trails present hikers and cyclists with challenges: Uphill and downhill around the Diemelsee lake and over the highest mountains in the Sauerland. In this unique nature park, sporting challenges and historical experiences go hand in hand.

In harmony with nature

Tent, food, flashlight. All the essentials for the next few days are in your rucksack. You're ready to go. On an adventure that grounds you. A tour lasting several days, on foot or by bike. And without fixed accommodation. On the Diemelsteig or Uplandsteig, a total of nine trekking sites offer a place to sleep. Here you can spend the night in the middle of nature, gaze at the starry night sky, experience the most beautiful sunrises and let your gaze wander over dew-covered meadows and the mountains of the Sauerland in the morning. An all-encompassing nature experience where man and nature are in harmony. Gentle and decelerated.

Challenging altitude meters

Fancy a view? A total of nine eight-hundred-meter peaks are waiting to be climbed. Well-signposted routes and natural paths included. You are spoilt for choice: six quality trails lead hikers through the beautiful natural landscape. Uplandsteig, Diemelsteig, Rothaarsteig, Briloner Kammweg, Sauerland Höhenflug or Sauerland-Waldroute - who can decide?

The cycling experience here is also limitless: you can head up into the mountains, on a leisurely route around the Diemelsee lake or on flowing trails in the bike park. The Diemel Cycle Path is ideal for those who want to cycle for two or three days without any major inclines. The route runs along the Diemel mostly on asphalted paths through charming natural landscapes past medieval village centers and pretty half-timbered houses.

Geopark Grenzwelten

Open your eyes! Have you spotted the historic stones along the cycle and hiking trails? They once marked the border between Hesse and Westphalia.

If you want to follow in the footsteps of the past, the Grenzwelten Geopark offers insights into the history of the earth and the formation of the cultural and natural landscapes around the lake. Did you know that around 400 million years ago, there was a primeval sea on the site of the Diemelsee Nature Park? Later, land masses formed, a coastline emerged and enormous tectonic forces finally caused the mountains to rise.
