Information on the history
Haus Rüschhaus was built between 1745 and 1749. The Westphalian Baroque master Johann Conrad Schlaun created his own country residence with Haus Rüschhaus on an old moated farmstead. The house combines features of rural, representative and stately architecture both inside and out. Schlaun gave the moat island a clear form and the kitchen garden and ornamental garden were designed symmetrically in the Baroque style.
After the death of her father, the author Anette von Droste-Hülshoff moved into the Rüschhaus with her sister and mother. The small baroque house is located about 5 km from Hülshoff Castle, the birthplace of Anette von Droste-Hülshoff. Anette von Droste-Hülshoff lived on the mezzanine floor of the house from 1826 to 1846. In her time, the kitchen garden was overgrown and was only later replanted as a baroque garden according to Schlaun's plans.
