What's the best thing about hiking and long walks? Of course, the surrounding nature, the forests and fields, rivers to cross and, above all, simply clearing your head. But there is something else that hikers appreciate so much on strenuous tours and during sporting challenges: The stops in between. The little breaks and picnics. Preferably in cosy farm cafés - with homemade cakes and a strong cup of coffee to recharge your batteries. Are you also a fan of cosy hiking breaks? Whether it's multi-day tours, romantic excursions or walks - here you will find a selection of circular routes with guaranteed farm cafés along the way.

Organic farms in the Windrath ValleyVelbert Learn moreThe full load of Hof-Cafés
The first break before the start? If you like, you can start this eleven-kilometre circular walk with a little refreshment. Although it is not a farm café located directly at Velbert-Langenberg railway station, but an organic bakery, you can still get good coffee here. Hikers can expect to find several farm cafés, each one more beautiful than the last, on the Organic Farms trail in the Windrather Tal valley, a discovery loop of the neanderland Steig. It's always worth taking off your rucksack here and lingering for a while. Our favourite: the Örk farm with its organic food shop.

Heiligenhauser roundHeiligenhaus Learn moreBreak in the Vogelsangbach valley
The ideal loop for a Sunday outing: at around eight kilometres, not too long and not too short, it goes a little uphill and downhill and through tranquil nature reserves such as the Rinderbach valley. Halfway along this discovery loop of the neanderland Steig, there is a former farmhouse in the Vogelsangbach valley right by the stream - with a beautiful beer garden and a cosy restaurant. The Café Herberge. It's worth staying a little longer here and enjoying the peaceful location in the middle of nature. If you are up for a second break, you can also stop off at the Hofcafé Abtsküche at the end of the circular tour. With homemade cakes and a direct view of a reservoir.

Bison TrailBad Berleburg Wingeshausen Learn moreVisit the shaggy giants
The Sonnenhof farm café is the ideal starting point for the bison trail circular walk. An idyllic place, characterised by country life and a fantastic panoramic view over the village. If you love farm animals, you should save a stop for the end of the 13.5 kilometre hike. Otherwise there is a risk of not setting off at all. But the bison trail also has animal surprises in store. The kings of the forest live here. The trail leads through the Rohrbach valley along many paths to the bison enclosure, where part of the herd lives.

Farm pathLohmar Learn moreOn a first-name basis with the black-and-white
It is the dairy breed that hikers in the Bergisches Land probably encounter most often - the black-and-white. Background information about the spotted four-legged friends and other farm animals such as geese, chickens and pigs as well as typical crops grown on Bergisch fields can be found on eleven information boards along the 12.6 kilometre long Bergisch farm trail. And a total of three farm cafés invite you to take a break - the Schiefelbusch farm, the Gammersbacher Mühle mill and the Krewelshof farm.

Red kite high routeBad Berleburg Elsoff Learn moreWith a window to the cowshed
You should take plenty of time for this circular tour. It covers a good 45 kilometres through North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse. With marvellous views over the Wittgensteiner Bergland and idyllically situated farms. And with probably the most unusual rest stop - the Rinderstübchen. It may not be a traditional farm café, but you can enjoy regional products here too. There is also a "live insight" into cattle farming. A window to the cowshed makes the break something special.
