Floodplain landscape, apple trees and majestic birdsStork route

Loud stork chattering. Three young birds sit in the nest and are fed by their parents. Bislich, the village near Wesel on the Lower Rhine, with its damp meadows, dredging holes and ponds, is a particularly attractive habitat for storks. There are numerous stork nests along the 14-kilometre-long stork route. Many of them are occupied during the breeding season from April to August. Two pairs of storks even live here all year round in their large nests.

Orchards, a local history museum, cafés and a ferry house on the Rhine - the barrier-free circular tour, which can be experienced on foot or by bike, not only offers stork watching, but also many other highlights along the way. Silke and Hannah decide in favour of hiking boots and give you a tip straight away: Make sure you plan enough time, there is so much to discover. And don't forget your camera and binoculars!

Along the old dykeLike by the sea

It's quite impressive: storks accompany us the whole way. They appear on roofs, search for food in the Rhine floodplains, we see their nests along the way and one even flies directly over our heads. We quickly realise that Bislich must be a true paradise for these majestic animals. We pass the ferry that would take us to Xanten and reach the old ferry house. The ideal place for a first rest. But we've only just set off and think it's still a bit early for a break. So we carry on - along the old dyke. On the left, a view of country houses and farms, on the right the Rhine meadows and the ships on the Rhine. A light breeze blows across our faces. It feels a bit like being by the sea.

Through roses and applesWild and romantic sections of the trail

A large sign at the entrance to an apple orchard shows us the way through a very romantic section of the hiking trail. The special thing about this orchard is that not only apple trees grow here, but also roses in all colours and sizes. We stroll along the paths, completely enchanted. A young deer suddenly appears in a meadow. A bench under a tree invites us to linger. We could spend much longer in this marvellous garden, but signs point the way to the Clostermann family's Neuhollandshof farm. Even in their apple orchard, we can sense the respectful way in which the family treats nature here. Every living creature has its space and its time.

Farms along the wayYard love

Arriving at Neuhollandshof, we find ourselves in the middle of preparations for the upcoming Rose Festival at the weekend. Beer benches are being set up and roses for sale are being prepared. The farm itself is as wildly romantic as the apple orchard. A medicinal herb garden, a tree swing and a large table under a tree, where we take a seat and unpack our sandwiches, have been lovingly designed. We could linger here forever.

In addition to the Neuhollandshof, our hike takes us past farms and farmhouses that characterise the Lower Rhine landscape. Sheep, goats and horses graze on the pastures here. And it is not uncommon to see a stork sitting on the roofs looking for prey.

Highlights off the route, moments of happiness for in-between and all the senses - keep your eyes open, you shouldn't miss these places on your hike along the Stork Route.

Our favourite places

  • Enchanted garden: a truly paradisiacal place opens up behind St John's Church in Bislich. Here you can find peace and relaxation. An enchanted garden with paths through the greenery, benches and a unique view: namely of a stork's nest. We could sit here forever and watch the stork family.
  • Deichdorfmuseum: Everything to do with the Rhine and the dyke, village life in "Anno Dazumal" or the birdlife of the Lower Rhine - there is so much to discover in the honourably run Deichdorfmuseum in Bislich. Bring a little time with you and discover the history of the village on the Lower Rhine before or after the hike.
  • Tree swing: At Neuhollandshof, a garden table under a large tree invites you to take a break. But before we bite into our sandwiches, we head for the tree swing. Relax and swing through the midday sun.
