German Inland Waterway Museum – experience the history of shipping in Duisburg

One of the most interesting museums in the Ruhr Area is the Museum Inland Waterway Museum in Duisburg. Here you can find out and experience everything about inland waterway navigation. The museum is located in the Duisburg district of Ruhrort in a former art nouveau indoor swimming pool, which is a listed building. You can also visit the German Inland Waterway in a very authentic style by boat.

Germany's largest museum on the history of inland waterway navigation

In its permanent exhibition, you can marvel at various maritime exhibits relating to the technical, economic and social history of German inland waterway navigation and immerse yourself in the history of navigation from the Stone Age to the present with multimedia installations. On three floors, you will see many detailed models and numerous exhibits up close.

Immerse yourself in life and work on board of a ship

The exhibition focuses on life and work on board of a ship. You will learn interesting facts about the everyday life of the skippers and their families on water and on land. Other areas include passenger shipping and Rhine romanticism, handling techniques in the port, the history of the Duisburg-Ruhrort ports, the German canal system and river and lock construction.
