The Museum of Applied Arts Cologne (MAKK) is presenting "Fascination Jewelry. 7000 Years of Jewelry Art at the MAKK", the MAKK presents the highlights of its impressive jewelry collection in an exhibition for the first time. With 370 selected exhibits from 7000 years of jewelry history, including ancient gems and contemporary works, the exhibition not only sheds light on the historical development, but also on themes such as symbolism, luxury, identity and gender. Special emphasis is placed on pieces of jewelry from antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as well as the 19th century, one of the richest eras of European fine jewelry.
The exhibition features masterpieces by renowned jewelry artists such as Lucien Falize, René Lalique and Peter Chang. A special highlight is the work of Cologne goldsmith Elisabeth Treskow, who donated her collection of antique gems and her own works to the MAKK. With her revival of the granulation technique, she had a decisive influence on modern jewelry art. The exhibition thus offers a multifaceted overview of the social and artistic significance of jewelry over the millennia.
