Kunstpalast Düsseldorf is presenting a comprehensive exhibition on the theme of "Motherhood" in spring 2025. The show "MAMA. From Maria to Merkel" is dedicated to the many facets and cultural concepts of motherhood. With around 120 exhibits ranging from 14th century art to the present day, the show sheds light on how social expectations continue to shape the image of motherhood today.
The exhibition brings together a wide range of media, including paintings, sculptures, video installations, photography and everyday objects. It even includes music and commercial imagery. A juxtaposition of the works draws attention to historical continuities, but also shows the changeable nature of individual images of the mother, which have always been reinterpreted, appropriated and discussed. Visitors can expect a cultural panorama that needs to be opened up and explored for themselves.
Another highlight exhibition: Elias Sime
Guests of the Kunstpalast who visit the MAMA exhibition can then experience another highlight exhibition in the same building. From February 12 to June 1, 2025, the Düsseldorf cultural institution is dedicating an exhibition to the artist Elias Sime (*1968). It is the first major solo exhibition in Germany to focus on the work of the Ethiopian artist. Visitors can look forward to large-format reliefs that Sime assembles from everyday objects and discarded electronic components. Themes such as mass consumption, the influence of technology and forms of communication are addressed.
Palace blooms
From March 21 to 30, 2025, the Kunstpalast will be fragrant and blooming: Düsseldorf florists will create floral interpretations to match the rooms or individual works in the collection. The works ideally complement the exhibits.
