Contrasts between black and white. Light color accents. Shades of gray form shadows and silhouettes. Landscapes and abstract bodies appear before the eye as if from nowhere. The exhibition "Ink Walks" at the Museum of East Asian Art Cologne (MOKK) presents the extraordinary works on paper by contemporary Chinese artist Jianfeng Pan.
The show presents works from the past decade, ranging from small albums to monumental scroll formats. It quickly becomes clear to visitors that Pan's work is deeply rooted in China's historical art of writing and painting, as well as being influenced by his training as a graphic artist. His visual language is powerful. It combines philosophical tradition with motifs from the Scandinavian natural landscape. Pan's aim is to establish calligraphy as a contemporary medium. He describes himself as a "social calligrapher" who uses "radical ink" and "mindful ink" techniques.
