The whole cosmos of Ewald Mataré

The large Mataré exhibition at the Museum Kurhaus Kleve presents the work of the German sculptor, medalist, graphic artist and painter in its entirety. The show touches on his beginnings in Berlin, the memorial in Kleve, his international works, his art in architecture and the women around Mataré.

Individual exhibits allow visitors to understand how the actor Heinz Rühmann and the Millowitsch theater family turned to the famous sculptor. The disqualification as a "degenerate artist" during the Third Reich is also addressed. The exhibition architecture supports the experience, which extends over 20 rooms. The atmosphere of Ewald Mataré's home café in Berlin and that of many other artists is also brought back to life.

As part of the exhibition, the MKK team is also presenting the latest research findings from the newly created Mataré archive. The museum's collection has recently grown considerably thanks to a generous donation in 2023. In total, the legacy of patron and former museum director Guido de Werd included more than 280 sculptures made of wood, bronze and ceramics, as well as designs in plaster, 230 woodcuts, 455 drawings, 101 watercolors, three paintings and 20 never-before-exhibited designs for Kunst am Bau projects.
