With the exhibition "Between Pixel and Pigment. Hybrid painting in post-digital times", the Kunsthalle Bielefeld and the Marta Herford are jointly exploring the question of how the production of art has changed over the past 20 years. With this show, the two museums aim to open up new approaches to the (post-)digital transformation in contemporary painting.
To this end, they are simultaneously presenting 40 international artistic positions along four thematic strands. Digital production techniques, the use of codes and experimentation with big data are decisive for the exhibited works. The works have been created using processes such as 3D printing, augmented reality, motion capturing and morphing. Opulent spatial installations by artist duo Ashley Hans Scheirl and Jakob Lena Knebl, for example, show how analog and digital montage techniques can intertwine and create fluid transitions between painting, sculpture, film and fashion.
Historical works complement the post-digital exhibition. Guests will learn from exhibits by Kasimir Malevich, Vera Molnár and Andy Warhol why they can be seen as precursors of hybrid painting.
