Every year, the Düsseldorf funfair takes place on the fairground on the left bank of the Rhine in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel from the third week of July. With a frontage of around 4.5 kilometers, it can call itself the largest funfair on the Rhine.
Over 300 showmen from Germany and abroad present a colorful selection of rides, stalls and carousels on the 165,000 square meter fairgrounds. Whether fast-paced, child-friendly, breathtaking, enchanting or even nostalgic - every fairground visitor will find their personal favorite among the rides and stalls on the Rhine meadows.
Funfair with tradition
The largest funfair on the Rhine, also known simply as the Rhine funfair, has every right to be nostalgic: The funfair has a long tradition and looks back on centuries of history.
The tradition of the customary shooting of birds at the fair on the occasion of the consecration of the Catholic basilica of St. Lambertus has been documented since 1435. The festival also celebrates the town's patron saint, St. Apollinaris of Ravenna, in whose honour the final fireworks display is still held on the last Friday of the fair week.
Fairground in Oberkassel
Over the centuries, the small fair in honor of the basilica and the city's patron saint developed into a major spectacle. With the relocation to the fairground in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel in 1901, the foundations were laid for today's largest funfair on the Rhine.
Today's fairground venue not only offers visitors plenty of space, but also a panoramic view of Düsseldorf's old town. Almost four million visitors from Germany and abroad now enjoy the attractions of the big funfair on the Rhine.
International delicacies
In addition to the wide range of rides, funfair visitors can look forward to many culinary highlights every year. In addition to German specialties such as bratwurst, fresh pretzels, potato pancakes and various fish dishes, the funfair also always has international offerings. For example, there is already a Chinese garden and numerous Mexican and French stalls that tempt visitors with special dishes.
Of course, Düsseldorf's traditional home breweries are also part of the party. The beer specialty of the NRW state capital, the dark Altbier, is certainly not to be missed at the Rhine fair - the Düsseldorf breweries Schumacher, Schlüssel, Füchschen and Schlösser ensure this every year.
