The Rhine is ablaze five times a year: Between May and September, spectacular fireworks are set off on various stretches of the Middle Rhine, lighting up the river and its banks in every imaginable color.
The North Rhine-Westphalian city of Bonn will also be taking part: on the Saturday of the first weekend in May, the section of the Rhine between the former German capital and the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Linz am Rhein will be the focus of Rhine in Flames. 1,500 red-glowing Bengal torches will be lit along the banks of the river and sights such as the Rolandsbogen, Drachenfels and Petersberg will be atmospherically illuminated. Around 60 illuminated ships also sail along the Rhine.
On the banks, the cities celebrate five riverside festivals at different locations, each of which sets off a firework display, culminating in a music-synchronized fire spectacle with an accompanying drone show.
The three-day event in Bonn's Rheinaue also offers an extensive stage program for young and old throughout its duration. With three festival stages on which bands and artists perform, there should be something for everyone.
