The world's oceans are beautiful. The "Planet Ocean" exhibition in the Oberhausen Gasometer makes this clear with large-format photographs and films, a specially designed sound room and the immersive installation of "The Wave". In the airspace of the gasometer, a living ocean world is created on oversized screens, in which a variety of life forms cavort. From their seats, guests can watch schools of fish drifting through the water or see sea giants in their original size.
On the first floor, recordings show a harlequin octopus dancing merrily through a lagoon, a blue shark hunting or a rag fish camouflaging itself. The sound room manages to immerse guests even further. Here, thousands of tiny crustaceans, living coral reefs or a shoal of cod go about their daily business, making the sounds of popping, crackling, crashing and knocking. The topic of marine conservation is also addressed through various exhibits. For example, an interactive globe visualizes current research findings as a geographical information network.
