Cosmopolitan modernity

The exhibition "Cosmopolitan Modernism - Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and the Foreign" at the Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso Münster sheds light on the influences of non-European cultures on the artists of classical modernism. Over 50 exhibits are presented in three chapters - "Matisse in Tahiti and Martinique", "Picasso, Matisse and Orientalism" and "Chagall in Palestine". These include lithographs, etchings and linocuts from the museum's collection, supplemented by historical photographs and films from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibition examines the diverse interactions between artists and the "foreign" from a European perspective and places them in the context of art history, travel culture and colonial politics. It offers visitors a fascinating "window on the world".
