Beethoven and Kant: two masters of their craft. Two different disciplines, many common ideas. In its new special exhibition, the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn shows how the composer and the philosopher resemble each other. Themes such as genius, republic and freedom are topics that both personalities always paid tribute to in their work.
Beethoven's enthusiasm for Kant is well documented. Throughout his life, from his youth in Bonn, Beethoven studied Kant's writings. The exhibition, which is being organized to mark the 300th anniversary of Kant's birth and the 14th International Kant Congress, presents original documents such as letters, notes and conversation books by Beethoven. They demonstrate Beethoven's proximity to Kant's Enlightenment ideas in many respects, which is also illustrated with relevant quotations from Kant.
