LVR Industrial Museum Cromford Textile Factory

Ratingen

The first factory on the European continent - it is located in Ratingen.

Where cotton was spun and woven on a grand scale until the 1970s, today the exhibition shows how the textile industry began. At the heart of the factory are the functional spinning machines, which show how cotton was spun 200 years ago.

The magnificent manor house was once the economic control center and bourgeois residence of the entrepreneurial family. The exhibition there tells of the life and work of the Brügelmanns - both their business activities and their very private affairs.

In the manor house, the museum café invites you to linger and enjoy the historical atmosphere with coffee and cake specialties. The museum store in the factory offers a wide range of products related to the themes of the LVR Industrial Museum Textile Factory Cromford.

Exciting industrial history in Ratingen and a cycle tour in the Angertal valley

It gets loud in one of the oldest preserved industrial plants in Germany, the Cromford cotton mill, when the large water wheel starts moving and drives the 96 spindles of the original "water frames".

  • Ratingen is located in the countryside between the major cities on the Rhine, Ruhr and Wupper rivers.
  • One of the oldest preserved industrial plants in Germany, the Cromford cotton mill, makes a loud noise when the large water wheel starts moving and drives the 96 spindles of the authentic "Water Frames". Next door, you can experience peace, glory and splendour in the magnificent manor house of the entrepreneurial family.
  • In the Cromford Museum Café, you can soak up the historical atmosphere of the LVR Industrial Museum and enjoy a good view of the magnificent park surrounding the factory site. You will find the cosy Café Perfetto on the market square.
  • In good weather, you cycle along lakes, historic mills and moated castles through the neighbouring Angertal valley to the medieval town of Kaiserswerth on the Rhine.
  • Alternatively, if you want to find out more about the industrial history of Ratingen, the industrial trail is just the thing for you - on foot or by bike. You can even follow in the footsteps of our ancestors on the neanderlandsteig trail past the Neanderthal Museum, for example. The hiking route covers the whole of neanderland in the district of Mettmann.
  • Excursion tip: When the weather is nice, you can end the day in the "Liebevoll" beer garden in the Auermühle.
  • Overnight tip: Hotel Restaurant Bergischer Hof or Hotel Haus Kronenthal in Ratingen.
